Both Kids Back at School

I had both kids home from school yesterday sick.  I took them both to the doctor.  Of course, I got the diagnosis or a viral flu or cold and they just need to wait it out.  I just love paying co-pays for each kid for the doctor to tell me there is nothing he will do for them (frustrating is an understatement).  On top of that, I am starting to catch whatever it is that they have, oh joy.

The good news is that both kids felt a little better today and are back at school.  Meanwhile, I am not feeling all that great and have a ton of laundry to do to catch up on, since my son was home 3 days this week. Why is it when someone is home, nothing ever gets done?

I did catch a little of the Royal Wedding this morning and I must say, Kate looked fabulous!  It is nice to have a little good news going on after the devastation in Alabama and neighboring states.  My heart really goes out to them.  This afternoon we have the excitement of the shuttle launch.  I will make time for that since I can see it from my house (yeah, really).  I am interested to see if Obama will make it to the launch though.  I am expecting a lot of protesters if he does.  A lot of people are ticked about his cancellation of the Shuttle Program and its replacement the Constellation Program.  We have already had a lot of people laid off in this area because of that, and still a lot more will be laid off too after the last launch of the shuttle in June (no wonder why I haven't found a job yet).

Well, I guess I had better get to work.  My daughter has a soccer tournament this weekend so if I don't get everything done today, I am up a creek.

Sick Kid and a Scare

My son is home sick from school this morning.  I probably should have kept him home from school yesterday, but he feigned well so he would not miss a baseball game.  I think I have one of the few kids that try to pretend that they are well so they can go to school.  I think yesterday was too much for him since his team left shortly after school for an away game that started at 7:00.  He never got back to school until 10:00 at night.  This morning he is totally wiped out.

I should have known how bad he was since he had a bad experience Monday at the eye doctor's office.  I knew he had a cold and gave him cold medication and told him to eat before we left for the appointment.  Since he is 14, I did not monitor him very closely.  So, we went to doctor's office for contacts.  They had my son read eye charts and then put the contacts in and he read eye charts again.  The doctor came in and spoke to us and checked over my son.  Everything was okay, so they moved us to another room where a tech was going to teach my son how to put in and take out his contacts and how to clean them.  She had him take out the contact in each eye and clean them.  It took some time, but he was doing great.  Just when she was going to have him put the contacts back in, my son said he didn't feel well.  I guess the tech recognized what was going on and ran to get the doctor.  So hear I am alone in the room with him and I look over at my son and he sits back, his eyes roll back in his head and all the blood drained from his face.  At this point he had big purple circles around his eyes, he was sheet white and had blue lips. Let's just say I FREAKED!!!  I thought he was dying or something.  He had passed out cold and I was trying to revive him when the doctor came in.

The doctor was surprised that my son had passed out and asked me if he was sick or anything.  I advised him that my son had a cold.   He advised that patients often passed out in the exam rooms at his office, but usually not while messing with the contacts.  He said that usually people that pass out when they get shots or give blood also have the same reaction at the optometrist too.  Who knewy?  Since my son has never had anything other than just anxiety over shots or giving blood, he thinks that my son being sick and the fact that my son didn't eat breakfast (he should have listened to mom), and the anxiety of dealing with the contacts created the perfect storm that caused him to pass out.  Needless to say that he did not get his contacts on Monday.  We will try again on Friday if he is over this cold.

I must say that the rest of Monday was a mess for me.  I was pretty much toast.  I think my fear that there was something major wrong and my freaking out short circuited me or something because I was useless the rest of the day.  There is nothing quite like thinking your kid is in mortal danger to really rattle you.

So now, the good news is that today I get a day to baby my son.  He normally hates that since he is 14 and thinks he doesn't need his Mom.  But, let him get a cold and he acts just like a needy man with a man-cold and loves when I take care of him.  Yes, the whole man-cold thing starts when they go through puberty.  It is funny to watch.  What is more funny is John's reaction to my son having a man cold.  He thinks my son is over dramatic when John is just as bad as my son or worse when he has a cold.  God forbid if they are both sick at the same time because it is battle of the man-colds.

Great News!

John and I received great news this weekend.  John's youngest son (20 years old) has received a Presidential Scholarship that covers 100% of the tuition at a local private college.  Let me just say that the college is not cheap by any means, so this scholarship is for a substantial amount.  Woohoo!!!  Needless to say that we are beyond proud and happy.

I must mention that I am also thrilled because this son is setting such a great example for my kids.  He seems to be making a lot of good choices and is applying for scholarships and working at a the local community college when he attended there.  Now my kids see someone they know accomplish the goals they set out to complete.  It is great to watch.

My 12 Year Old Daughter Ran her 1st 5K Today

My 12 year old daughter ran her 1st 5K today.  Unfortunately I was not there to see it.  My kids' step-mom was supposed to run but she had an injury and my daughter ran for her.  My ex also ran.

I am really proud though.  When she found out Friday night that she was going to be running, she was excited.  I don't think too many 12 year old girls are running 5K's so I think it is a big accomplishment.

Of course, the evil side of me offered her $5 to beat her dad in the run, but she wasn't able to pull that off.  Darn, I would have liked to see him get beat by his 12 year old daughter.  Yes, I know, I'm evil.....

Finally, My Stubborn Son is On Board

Over three years ago, my son got glasses.  His vision is not really bad, but he needs the glasses for a slight correction.  Of course the glasses cost a small fortune and then my stubborn boy refused to wear them.  He knows he needs them, but glasses just are not cool, unless you are a girl apparently.  What is it with the teen girls wearing fake glasses?  My niece wears them and my daughter wears a pair that belongs to a friend, I just don't get it.

Anyway, this year my son is playing varsity baseball at his school and is really trying to improve his hitting but is having a little problem with the timing.  And of course, I chime in "maybe you should be wearing your glasses".  I  mean really, how can you expect to hit a ball coming at you at 80+ mph when you don't wear your glasses.  Well, it finally got through to my son and he decides that no, he doesn't want to wear his glasses, but can I make him an appointment so that he can get contacts?

The first thought that comes to my mind is "wooohoooo" but then I remember that this is my child that won't let me put eye drops in his eyes and the one I had to hold down in the chair at the optometrist when he was about 9 so that they could put the drops in his eyes to dilate them.  Now I am wondering how boy wonder is gonna pull this one off.

So yesterday we went to the optometrist and had his check-up.  Luckily his eyes did not change that much since he received his glasses over 3 years ago so we are able to use all his insurance allowance for his contacts (he has insurance through his dad, thank goodness).  We have an appointment Monday to get the contacts.  I will mention that my son had no problem with letting everyone mess with his eyes at the appointment and he had to demonstrate that he could touch his own eye to the doctor before he was given the appointment to get contacts.

I am looking forward to Monday to see if my son's love for baseball can pull him through this.   I really think his hitting will improve once he has contacts, but I am just wondering about the whole putting the contacts in and taking them out on his part.  I guess it will be an adventure.

Cirque Dreams Illumination

John's mom turned 80 over the past weekend.  For part of the birthday celebration we went out to see Cirque Dreams Illumination.  I was not sure what to expect since I was unfamiliar with Cirque Dreams.  We have all heard of Cirque du Soleil, but this performance was much cheaper than any of those performances and is an entirely different Cirque (circus).  Let me just say, I was pleasantly surprised.  Cirque Dreams Illumination was pretty fantastic.  The performance had all the quirky yet astounding acts that you would expect from Cirque du Soleil.  There was music (in English) and dancing, a rope walker, contortionists that must not have had spines, humor, strong men, and many acts that were just amazing.

There is a short video on YouTube that you can view http://youtu.be/UK-vxsrf2Ds.  If Cirque Dreams comes to a location near you, expect a terrific show.

Makeup Monday

I guess I have a makeup Monday before me. John's mother had her 80th birthday yesterday so we had a full schedule over the weekend with family that is in town. Of course that means that I never got much done in the way of housework and laundry. So, I will have to makeup for loss time and tackle the list of chores today.

I do feel bad watching the news this morning as I was not even aware of the severity of the tornadoes that hit this past weekend. My heart goes out to all those families that have been affected.

What do you have planned for Monday? I still can't believe that Easter is less than a week away too...times passes so fast.

Ugly Shoes

I received a gift certificate last week from L.L. Bean.  I have never bought anything from there before  but I was excited because they do have a great reputation.  I received my package on Monday and the kids were horrified as I pulled out what they consider ugly shoes.   I must admit that they are very plain and are not anything glamorous, but let me tell you that they are comfortable and that was exactly what I was going for.  Of course the jokes never end around here because I do have big feet and had to get a 9.5 wide, so they actually look like men's slippers (or boats), but oh well.  The kids don't want me to wear them anywhere that their friends may see them.  Too bad.  I'm going to anyway.  I already wore them to soccer practice and there is a baseball game tonight so they will make their appearance there as well.  I wore them outside with shorts on yesterday to check the mail and you would think that I was going outside naked the way the kids reacted...too funny.

Do you have anything you like to wear or use that other people think is just ugly?  I am sure I am not the only one.  I guess I have reached that age where I don't care what it looks like as long as it is functional and feels good.  Maybe I should start hanging out with the ladies in the Red Hat Society, because I don't think they would mind.

My Dog is Getting to be Neurotic

My dog is  about 9 and 1/2 years old.  We are guessing because I got him from a rescue shelter, but that is our best guess.  I have noticed though that the older he gets, the more neurotic he becomes. He was never a dog that had to have routines and is actually a very good dog.  Ever since we moved into the house that we are in, he has always been a little leery of the tile floors.  We have an area rug down in the main room and runners in the hallways and walking areas.  We tease our dog and call him "lava dog" because he scurries  from carpet to carpet like the kids did when they were little and pretended the tile was lava.  As he gets older though, it is only getting worse.  When he used to be able to navigate a 6 foot or more area of tile without stressing out, he is now stressing out about every inch of tile he touches.  And of course, the more stressed my dog is, the faster he tries to scurry and the chances of slipping increase.

One strange thing that he does to overcome this fear is that he often backs up on the tile.  Yes, when he has to take a corner around the couch, he walks backwards.  It is the funniest thing to watch.  We usually mock him and make the "beep, beep, beep" sounds like he is a truck backing up.  I guess he feels like since he cannot see the tile since he is going backwards that it is safer.  Very strange.

So now, here I am trying to add more throw rugs down so the dog can walk across the floor without having an anxiety attack.  I am wondering if maybe I should just get him rubber bottom booties instead, or would just make him more neurotic.

Busy Wednesday

Due to the storm yesterday, I did not get all my errands completed.  Have to finish them today.  Also both kids have dentist appointments today, one before school and one after.  What was I thinking?  Good thing I am not currently working other than blogging or I would never get anything done.

By the way, the storm yesterday was not nearly as bad as the weather gurus predicted.  I am kinda sick of their whole chicken little attitude of "the sky is falling".  There was some damage nearby, but my yard/house was unscathed.  I guess by the time the storm got to my area it was not as intense, which is a good thing.

I feel for all those people in other areas that received major damage and tornadoes.  After going through a few hurricanes, I can attest that Mother Nature can be a b&*%@.  I am concerned about the continual onslaught of weather emergencies that are occurring.  Who exactly have we ticked off?

Waiting for Bad Weather

I am watching the news this morning and see that we are supposed to get severe storms about 11 AM today.  Oh joy! (note the sarcasm).  So now I am trying to figure out how to plan my day.  I was going to have a morning of running errands and an afternoon of gardening followed by my son's baseball game.  I am thinking the game will probably be cancelled if the storms are as bad as they are predicting and I may have to spend the evening in recovery if we get hurricane force winds (70 mph).  I guess I had better hurry and get those errands done before all hell breaks loose.

Returned Friday Night

I returned Friday night from our spring break trip to Kentucky.  We had a good time and enjoyed visiting with relatives, but am I glad to be home.  Did I mention that it snowed there?  Everybody thought we would be thrilled to see snow since we are from Florida, but not so much.  If it isn't deep enough to sled ride on, then what is the point?  I am happy to be back in my Florida sunshine.  I think I saw more sun yesterday at my daughter's soccer game then I did all week in KY.  I had forgotten how gloomy it is all winter up there.

Also, I have been sleeping like a baby since I got back.  I definitely love my bed and my nephew's bed that I was sleeping on while we visited just didn't cut it.  Also, I am thrilled to be able to catch up on my blogs and be back on my desktop. I think my desktop is so much easier, I don't think I could ever fully convert to just a laptop.

We did have fun while we were in Kentucky though.  My family is just wacky, which provides for non-stop entertainment, while at the same time reminding me why I live 1000 miles away.  We went to the Cincinnati Zoo, the Freedom Center and the Reds openining day parade while we were there, so we kept very busy.  I also went out one night and met up with some old friends, which was nice.  Oh yeah, the kids went to laser tag with their cousins one night too.  All the kids got along pretty well and really enjoyed each other.  My sister's kids are 16 & 13, and my kids are 14 & 12, so they were a riot together.  The only complaint was that they were definitely watching some inappropriate videos on You Tube.  It is amazing what kids find funny.

We are all settling into our home routine now.  Of course John and I are tackling the mountain of laundry.  I don't miss the bulky laundry that cold weather requires.  I am glad we are back in shorts weather.
